SAMwrap Questions
  1. Problem:
Can I use SAMwrap to wrap both Unix and Windows applications and monitor them from the same license server?
  2. Answer:
Yes. You will need to download and install SAMwrap on both platforms. Once you decide what machine will be the license server, you can wrap your applications and move the saved license file to the license server machine.

  3. Problem:
Can I run my license server on Unix if I wrap Windows applications?
  4. Answer:
Yes. You will need to download and install SAMwrap on both platforms because you will need the swrap vendor daemon on the Unix machine. Once SAMwrap has been installed on the Windows machine, start and setup SAMwrap with your Unix license server information and wrap your applications. After the license file has been saved, move it to your Unix license server machine and start your license server.

  5. Problem:
I have SAMwrap setup for Redundant Servers, but the swrapper.lf only shows one port@host.
  6. Answer:
While SAMwrap does support redundant servers, the swrapper.lf file is only created with one port@host.
    Workaround:
You will need to edit the swrapper.lf file and insert the other two port@host lines. If you are using windows, the list would be semi-colon(;) sepatated. If you are on Unix, the list would be colon (:) separated. For example:

    SAMWRAP_LICENSE_FILE=port@host1;port@host2;port@host3

    -or-

    SAMWRAP_LICENSE_FILE=port@host1:port@host2:port@host3

  7. Problem:
I have five users all on NT and all wanting to use software X. Where must Software X be installed for SamWrap to work?
  8. Answer:
Software X can be installed on a client machine, but each copy would need to be "wrapped". The best procedure to do this is:
    1. Have SAMwrap installed on one of the client machines (easiest if the machine that runs the license server is used with a copy of Software X and you install SAMwrap there)
    2. Run SWSETUP and open either the actual license file located on the license server or a copy of the license file on the local machine.
    3. With SWSETUP, wrap the local copy of Software X and create a license for it at the same time, specifying the total license count you will serve for Software X.
    4. Save the license file.
    5. Copy the license file to the server machine (if you were using a copy of the license file with SWSETUP)
    6. Start the license server.
    7. On all of the other machines which have Software X installed, rename the X.exe file to X.fwr and copy the X.exe and the swrapper.lf file created in Software X's directory to the client machine. This will recreate the wrapping process on those machines without having to use SWSETUP.
As you can see, if you are able to serve Software X from a server, steps #5 and #7 are not needed.

  9. Problem:
My wrapped application is complaining that it can't find a .dll. What do I do?

  10. Answer:
If the application references the DLL then you will need to use the original exe instead of the .fwr file. The license will have to reference the original executable instead of the .fwr file. This way the DLL can reference the original exe.
    Workaround:
How to use the original .exe instead of the .fwr. This example uses notepad.exe
    1. Before starting SWsetup32. Copy the original exe(notepad.exe) to a different location. For example, if the original notepad.exe is lcoated in c:\windows\notepad.exe then copy it to c:\orig\notepad.exe.
    2. Open SWsetup32. Click on New button under Licensed Applications Tab.
    3. Application File: Browse to the new location (i.e. c:\orig\notepad.exe).
    4. Enter in number of licenses and click on OK.
    5. Choose between Port@Host or license file. Then click on Next.
    6. Wrapping Wizard: This is where you will move the exe to the original location. Type in the original path. For example, c:\windows\notepad.exe
    7. Click on Finish
    8. Click on OK.
    9. Click on Check Now.
    10. Click on Quit.
    11. Save the license file. File -> Save.
The exe you want to run is now located in the moved location (i.e. c:\orig\notepad.exe)

  11. Problem:
The executable has a space in the name can it be wrapped with SAMwrap?

  12. Answer:
Rename the executable and remove the space. Now test it to verify that the application will run. If there is no issue wrap the application using the renamed executable. If this does not work you should contact your software vendor.
